Parking Structure on Second Street?
The Belmont Shore Parking Commission is expected to take up the topic of a proposed automated parking structure on 2nd Street at its next meeting on Thursday, June 18th. The Commission meets at 9 am at the Bay Shore Library (195 Bay Shore Avenue) and is open to the public.
The Parking Commission was handed the controversial proposal by the Long Beach City Council in a Closed Session on May 19th. At issue is whether the City of Long Beach should purchase the property at 5374 E. 2nd Street next to the library for use as an automated parking structure. The site was last occupied a year ago by the Roe Restaurant and Fish Market ... construction began and was then abandoned.
The owner is asking nearly $5 million dollars for the property. Mike Conway, the City's Director of Business and Property Development, estimated the cost of an automated parking structure for 64 cars would be $2.5 million. Conway said he didn't know where the money would come from. The Parking Commission is tasked with studying the financial feasibility and traffic impacts and to conduct community outreach.
At a Community meeting held in March by Councilwoman Suzie Price, many residents of Claremont Avenue, which borders the site, expressed concern and dismay at having an automated parking structure on their corner, citing a multitude of existing traffic and congestion problems. There are fears that it would just cause more problems.
“I am not pushing this one way or the other,” Price has said. “But, I am interested in exploring and studying this further to decide if this is feasible.”

Planning Commission Approved Fitness Center at
Former Yankee Doodles Site
The Planning Commission has approved turning Yankee Doodles into a 'fitness center' with a brand new second story, mezzanine and nearly 5,000 sq. ft. open roof deck.
The decision came last Thursday following an appeal hearing which focused on the lack of on-site parking, the size of the project, concerns over disturbances caused by noise and lighting from the roof deck, and questions as to whether state law had been properly followed.
Following a lengthy hearing, the Planning Commission decided that the City's Zoning Administrator had handled the matter properly, and voted unanimously to allow the project to go forward.

The New Beach Pedestrian Path had its Grand Opening on Sat., May 30
The opening ceremony featured a 5K Run with a thousand participants. There were food trucks, a Kid's Zone, a tribute band concert and celebratory speeches by Mayor Robert Garcia, Vice-Mayor Suja Lowenthal and Councilwoman Price. The 11-foot wide pedestrian-only path runs along 3.1 miles of the city’s shoreline, just inland from the bike path, between Shoreline Drive and 54th Place at Belmont Shore. The new path was constructed from a resin-based surface that is durable enough to withstand the coastal environment, but also less rigid and more conducive to walking and running than concrete.
Dogs and other animals are not allowed on the path.
