December 12, 2013
The meeting was called to order by President Terence Endersen at 6:00 pm. The other members of the Executive Board present were: Max Alavi, Julie Dean, Secretary Jeff Miller and Treasurer Robert O'Connor. Vice President Frank Elizondo and Executive Board members Sanne Berrig and Marvin Jones were absent. Twenty-four additional BSRA members and visitors were present.
The agenda for this meeting was approved. The minutes of the October and November meetings were approved.
Bay Shore Librarian Debi Gurley-Vilander announced classes for "e-book" readers in February.
LBPD East Division Commander Paul LeBaron reported details of some of the crime incidents in the Shore in November, including several assaults and robberies. Three of the assaults were on Second Street, involving alcohol use. The Christmas Parade was discussed - a concern was expressed about lack of crowd control in one location. The next Coffee with the Commander event will be January 9 at Bixby Park.
Terry Braunstein, a local artist, spoke about her design work for the city twelve years ago, which resulted in a comprehensive master plan for beach development. She expressed concern that the city is not utilizing the plan, and is hoping to delay construction of the new pedestrian path on the beach until the overall plan is reconsidered. She asked for support from the audience. Secretary Miller explained that BSRA previously had endorsed the city's plan for a new path, provided it is placed on the inland side of the existing path, and that the city has submitted such a plan to the Coastal Commission. A motion was approved to request the city prepare and implement a master plan for beach development.
BSBA Executive Director DeDe Rossi announced there will be free parking (two hour limit) at the meters on December 14, 15, 21, and 22. She said BSBA is planning to host a forum for Third District candidates. The restaurant Roe is operating a food truck on Second Street while their restaurant is closed for remodeling. Olives (Second St. at Argonne Ave.) will be closing, and a Mexican restaurant operator is considering taking over that location. The owner, Victor Avila, and his daughter spoke about their plans to open in March, and addressed questions from the audience. They would plan to seek a type 47 hard liquor license from ABC, and have happy hours in addition to their restaurant service. Audience members expressed concern about another hard liquor license in the Shore and about lack of parking for a restaurant.
Julie Maleki, Administrative Analyst from the Third District, announced planned sidewalk repairs in January and the upcoming opening of the temporary replacement for the Belmont Pool.
DeDe Rossi announced the continuation of the employee bus rider program by the Parking Commission.
President Endersen noted several current issues: a section of sidewalks blocked by construction activity, possible removal of billboards on Second St., and remodeling plans at the AES power generating facility on Studebaker Ave..
Secretary Miller announced his intention to send reminder notices in January to members who have not yet paid their dues for the year.
